A cooperative attempt by scholars to produce a high-quality Internet resource for medieval
studies. It is a collective effort but is headed up by Lynn H. Nelson, Carol Schriber and Laura
Blanchard, at Kalamazoo.
A wonderful resource for scholars and students and a formidable undertaking by the
Research Archivist of the Oriental Institute, Charles E. Jones. The site, a series of links to
internet-based resources on the Ancient Near East, as well as other areas of the ancient old
world from paleolithic through Islamic periods, is enormous - which is both its strength and its
weakness. Organized by two primary indices, "author" and "project or
institutional affiliation," it is most easily used by scholars and students who have some
knowledge of what they are looking for, since the index lists are long and take large amounts of
time to scroll through.
A very good peer-reviewed search engine that limits the search outcomes to topics which have
something to do with the classical or medieval period. Also contains a good links page to a
variety of other "high-end" resources for Internet research.
This site, which is based out of the University of London has offered their site as a
resource to the academic community since 1993. It is searchable and has good topic-specific,
era-specific, and geographically-specific listings. It also offers students and academics a way
to network with other historians and find out what is going on in various fields.
Georgetown University's database for medieval texts, images, and services on other servers
worldwide. Very well organized and searchable.
Links to thousands of biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, letters, narratives,
oral histories and more. Group biographies about people who share a common profession,
historical era or geography. Also general collections, resources on biographical criticism and
special collections
This site is a guide to web pages, archives, libraries and other repositories that have primary
source materials on or about women. It is part of the Archives for Research on Women and
Gender Project at the University of Texas at San Antonio Libraries, and is compiled by
Archivist Jill Jackson.
The Great Vowel Shift
The Great Vowel Shift was a massive sound change affecting the long vowels of English during
the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. Basically, the long vowels shifted upwards; that is, a
vowel that used to be pronounced in one place in the mouth would be pronounced in a different
place, higher up in the mouth. The Great Vowel Shift has had long-term implications for the
understanding of any English-language text written before or during the Shift. Our interactive See and Hear page adds sound and
animation to give you a sense of how this all works.
