Time
"we cannot abstract ideas from the historical epoch in which they appeared. Ideas are not balloons floating in space: one is marked "freedom" another "heliocentricity" and yet another "liberalism" or "fascism." The ideas must be understood as grounded in the historical epoch in which they first or later appear." Steven Kreis

To understand the major movements in social science it helps to place theoretical discussions in their geographical and historical contexts and to construct conceptual frameworks which acknowledge the pressing social and political issues and the nature of the cultures/societies which produced these theories and thinkers. One useful tool for this task is the timeline. Here are several that may help. I suggest you construct your own. |
|
| Western Civilization Timelines | - entries marked with an asterisk in the first column are more relevant to social science | |
| Timeline in excel format | - not pretty but more up to date and perhaps more useful | |
| Philosophy Timeline | To help keep the schools straight and see relationships | |
